Default What the hell am I doing?

One thing that people who visit my house find out about me is that I will buy just about anything if it is advertised in an infomercial. Today, I made my biggest (by $) purchase so far when I handed over my cc info for a Total Gym.

Anybody ever try one? If so, what did you think? Yeah, I know, that's the kind of thing I should have asked before buying but that's not the way sillyman does things.

And, yeah, that thread title was supposed to be "what the hell am I doing"

I don't buy stuff from infomercial...never can trust the quality.

I also recommend freeweights instead of those crazy contraptions. Trust me when I tell you, the actors they use in the infomercials didn't get their bodies by using those machines.

Return it and buy a small set of dumbbells, you will get a better workout and save $$$. The only down side to dumbbells is that some exercises require a spotter, unless you like dropping heavy weights on your face when your arm gives out.

I think aside from the money, you are not going to get a better workout from ANY other type of equipment. Those machines are designed to target exact areas that you are trying to work on. Will power is WAY more important than the gear, though. A soup can will give you a better work out, if you are committed, and a $30, 000 Nautalis system will do nothing, if you don't use it. (my biggest hurdle)...

    THIS system, I find intriguing...

I think anyone that posts in this thread needs to include a picture of them without their shirt on, just to prove they know what they are talking about.

Thanks, easyBob and Imzadi. I agree that actually using something is key (whatever it is). But, easyBob, are you saying that I won't end up looking like Chuck Norris (looking like Christie Brinkley probably shouldn't be my goal). Well, if I'm not gonna look like Chuck, might as well go ahead and shave too, no sense growing the beard.

And I have actually had pretty good luck with things (mostly a wide variety of kitchen gadgets) I bought from infomercials. They've done what was promised.

Oh, and for Gina. You first, and then me, maybe, if I actually use this thing for awhile in a "before" and "after" pic. Not just a "before".

I feel your pain. I bought the Total Gym years ago, back when it cost about $1,800. It's collecting dust and rust in the garage right now.

OK, so I guess what I'd like to know is why it's out there taking up space in the garage. Was it too difficult to use, or did you not see any benefits from using it, or did you just lose interest, or what?

I have good self control when it comes to spending money. Never buy anything just because it was on tv. But when those as-seen-on-tv products get into inventory of online stores and go down in price, I have tried a couple of them. Those little Micro/Magic Touch hair trimmers work well while they last but they burn out easily. Ped Egg works terrible. I did find a nose hair trimmer and a really large sports bag under $5 each that work great though.

You know what, Ravenmetal, I only recall Billy Mays hawking things like cleaning products. I'll buy that stuff at the grocery but I dont get it on TV.

Things I get on tv are stuff like the george foreman grill, the GT Express/101 cooker, I am loving my NuWave Oven since I got that a month or two ago.

I agree with easybob about freeweights. and as for Iwilllickgina's idea about posting pics: I'm a fat guy but at one point I was in great shape for a fat guy (Does that make sense?) I played football and got a scholarship to play at a Division 1 college, so I guess I knew what I was talking about at one point
