    Default Techie Nerdy Wireless question...

Ok so, so here is the thing, I just moved in w/my sister and her family the way the house is designed injunction with my room we were having trouble getting internet in my room. The house is entirely poured concrete, as is the detached garage, and my room above the garage and getting a wireless signal from out of that house, in to my room was impossible, even with an N router. So me and my brother in-law bought a wireless gaming adapter Linksys WGA600N to be exact hooked it up in the laundry room, drilled a couple of holes in the walls, and we now have a cable running from the adapter in to the garage and up in to my bedroom. Here is my question, can I hook a router (wireless or wired, doesn't matter much) to the wire coming from the adapter to share the connection with in my room so I can have my xbox hooked up and not have to constantly disconnecting the laptop?

Don't really know how the gaming adapter works, but I imagine you could do that. If the connection runs fine up there via a cable you should be able to connect it to a router & send the signal to different devices. As long as the devices aren't incompatible somehow. Might wanna try it with a router from the same manufacturers as the game adapter.

Okay, what you do first is call up some girls and invite them over to your new room. After that you don't play dungeons and dragons.

I can help you solve your problem but I would like more information.

    - Alone in your room no wireless signal in the rest of the house if you have wireless signal?

    - Your wireless signal as their access is configured: MAC address, IP, encryption, etc.. or has no security configuration?

    - Which make and model is your wireless ruoter, is configured to provide wireless internet?

    - What is the distance from your room to where you're putting the router?

    - You get said wireless signal from outside the house, you mean the wireless device is outside the house?

    - You get wireless signal from the street?

    - What is the make and model of wireless device that has a laptop - or the make and model of your laptop?

I would think you could get by with just using a 5 port switch : Amazon.com: Netgear FS105NA Switch 5Port Metal: Electronics

I use one connected to my series of power line adapters and it works great. No wires are run at all. All I have to do is plug one into the power outlet where my router is at and I have 3 others scattered around the other rooms in my house that I need internet which are also plugged into the wall.

yeah dude a switch is the best way to go for that -- just plug the cord coming into your room into the upload port on the switch and you're good to go!! -- also, as an FYI, if you're trying to get wireless on your desktop .. you can go out and buy a high-gain omni directional antenna .. that + wireless N router SHOULD be good through a couple walls.

lastly, if speed matters to you, make sure your switch is a GIGABIT switch .. meaning 10/100/1000 .. but that would mean that your NIC + router have to be gigabit too -- just an FYI if you want more speed =)
