Has anyone been watching the U.S. Open? There's this little American girl (5'6" is "little" in tennis) named Melanie Oudin, who's been pro for about a year, ranked #70 in the tournament, and she's currently in the quarterfinals. She's already bumped off three seeded players: Maria Sharapova, Elena Dementieva, and Nadia Petrova. She could be the best thing to happen to American tennis since the Williams sisters. She's cute, AND she can kick ass.

Forgive me; I get all giddy during tennis tournaments.

Have been keeping track---and in a city that embraces the underdog in the US Open historically---guess who is being rooted on?

The last time someone from the USA did this well, Serena Williams went all the way and took the whole enchilada.

So Sharapova was coming back from injury; what excuse does Nadia Petrova have?

I expect that she will probably rise into the top 20; I predict that Oudin (pronounced u-dan) going all the way and losing to Serena Williams.

The interesting thing about her is she's 17, and her boyfriend is only 15. He designed her shoes.

I was watching the highlights and wondering where she got those ugly shoes.

I'll miss her match tomorrow night against Wozniacki, as well as the rest of the tournament, because I'll be in Atlanta at a music festival. Here's hoping I won't run into her on the street, because she's still in New York playing tennis.

I wouldn't be surprised. BTW, WhyTF is Safina #1 and Serena #2? It seems like Safina has been getting her ass kicked most of the year.

The rankings update very slowly. If Serena Williams wins it all, she will regain the #1 ranking.

As for the shoes, everyone is believing in her now.

I have not got to watch much of any tennis matches this year. But this girl is going to be a big name in sports really soon. I have seen her play a little bit in the U.S. Open. Wow.

She is cute, I didn't want to post pics either, but I did Google some.

I wish her luck. I've watched a little. She's not great yet, but she's been consistent, which is enough to beat a lot of the women. Saw Sharapova choke away that match and serve terrible to let her comeback.

Sharapova was comimg back from surgery. But what about (13) Nadia Petrova? Petrova was just five points away from winning in straight sets and coughed it up to lose (Petrova was up 4-3 in the second set serving at 40-15).

Maybe, I dunno, but I did read before the tournament started that Safina would remain #1 no matter what happened.

What about (4) Dementieva? 44 unforced errors... personally, I think that match was a classic case of underestimating the rookie... but still... #4!!! If Oudin can beat her, she has a shot at beating Serena (if Clijsters doesn't do the job first). But there's still a couple matches to go yet.

Well, she has left her calling card, finally losing in the quarters. But I don't think tennis has seen the last of her by any means (she is in just her second pro year).

Oudin lost yesterday. Oh well.. she did good though. She is going to make a mark in tennis soon enough.
