I know a lot of people here don't talk about very serious things very often, but this is something I need to share with everybody I can because I think it's actually that groundbreaking.
This guy at MIT and his team have developed a means to conduct electrolysis on water (i.e. separating it into hydrogen and oxygen for power) using only sunlight and a chemical compound, with 80% efficiency. It basically means that using a half-liter of water (basically a bottle of Aquafina), you could generate enough electricity to power a 150 watt light bulb for 24 hours.
The best part? The water doesn't even have to be clean to do it. You could basically use this on wastewater and not only get energy from it, but also recombine it into safe, usable water all in the same process. I imagine that it could be done with saltwater as well.
I always take this kind of stuff with a grain of salt, because according to engineers the big stuff is always "a year away", but this technology is already past the prototype stage, and I think it deserves to be known about.
